Uses of Metals:
All the elements can be classified as metals or non-metals depending on their properties. Metals are electropositive in nature (Watch Uses of Metals Video to learn more). They generally have 1, 2 or 3 electrons in their valence shells and readily lose these electrons to form positively charged ions (cations).
Metals are strong, rigid and hard, these properties of metals can be used for making heavy machinery (like automobiles, aeroplanes, trains, trucks etc). Iron is most commonly used metal. It is used for making small objects like pin and in giant structures. Aluminium is another widely used metal due to its small density It is useful for making aeroplanes. Ability to conduct heat and electricity make metals very useful. Metals like copper, iron and aluminium is used for these purposes. Aluminium wires are widely used. Gold and silver is used for making jewellery. Good reflecting property of silver is used for making mirrors. Silver foils are widely used for wrapping of food items, medicines and other materials.
Zinc metal is used for galvanizing iron , in anti corrosion material, in medicinal fields and in alloys. Iron is used as a construction material in bridges, houses, ships etc. Iron, in the form of steel is used for making domestic utensils. Tin is used for soldering, for preparing foils, for metal coatings to prevent chemical action and corrosion, for panel lighting etc. Lead is used in making water pipes, in pigments, batteries, in alloys etc. Titanium finds extensive use in aircraft industries.
