Introduction to Plant Life Video:
Plants are living things that are made up of cells. They need air, water, soil, and sunlight to live. They cannot move from place to place, but their leaves move to catch the sun and their roots move towards water.
Parts of Plants:
We get food from all different parts of the plant: flowers, fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, stems, and leaves. Grass gives us a cool, soft place to walk. Some plants give us medicine, and trees are used to make paper and furniture. Woody plants are woody, hard, with thick stems, and are generally long lived. Examples of woody plants are trees and shrubs. The major parts of a wood plant are the leaves, branch, trunk, and roots.
Type of Plants:
Very big, tall and strong plants are called trees. They have a thick, brown and woody stem called trunk. They have many branches that bear leaves, flowers and fruits. They have thick and strong roots. Trees live for many years.
Shrubs are smaller than trees. They have many thin, brown and woody stems. They are also called bushes. Most shrubs live only for a few years. Some shrubs are hibiscus, lantana, etc.
Herbs are very small and weak plants. They have thin, green and soft stems. They live only for three to four months. They do not usually live for a long time. We get many of our vegetables from herbs. Some common herbs are coriander, mint, spinach, tulsi and marigold.
Climbers are plants with weak stems. They cannot stand straight. They climb on other plants, sticks or walls to grow.
Creepers are weak plants that mostly grow along the ground. They have weak stems and thin branches. They usually bear big fruits. Some plants grow in water. They are called water plants.
Parts of a plant :
Roots give support to a plant. They collect water and minerals from the ground. Then they send them to the rest of the plant. Roots usually grow under the ground. Stem is the main body of a plant.
Leaves branches and flowers grow from it. Stem usually grows above the ground. It carries food and water to all parts of the plant. Leaf makes food for a plant. It is called the kitchen of the plant.
Flower is the colourful part of a plant. It produces fruits or seeds.
Fruit is the fleshy part of a plant. It grows from flowers and has seeds inside it.
Seed is that part of a plant from which a new plant can grow.
Plants Source of Food :
Plants are the main source of food for humans. Plants unlike humans and animals manufacture their own food. They do so by the process known as photosynthesis by use of sunlight.
Fruit and vegetables provide fibre. They also provide many important vitamins and minerals and are low in calories. Fresh, local fruit and vegetables in season are best and can be very good value.
Humans depend on plants:
Humans depend on plants more thank they think because plants provide many things directly or indirectly such are food, clothing, fuel and in some cases even shelter. Clothing comes from plants that are found in nature, the mostly common fibre used to make clothes is cotton.
Use of Plants:
Mosses & Moss-Like Plants are dried and burned for fuel, medicinal uses as astringents, germicides, antiseptics and extracts for treatment of eczema, psoriasis, hemorrhoids, scabies, acne & insect bites.
