Introduction About Invention of Wheel:
The wheel was invented by the ancient Sumerians. They lived in the land between the Tigris and the Euphrates Rivers in the Middle East. From the beginning of human history people have dragged any load too heavy to be carried. But large objects are often of awkward shape and texture, liable to snag on any roughness in the ground.
History of Wheel:
Wooden sledges are first known, by at least 7000 BC, among communities living by hunting and fishing in northern Europe, on the fringes of the Arctic. It is possible that they use dogs to pull them, but the technological advance is valuable even without animal power. On icy ground a man can move a heavy load on a sledge with relatively little effort.
Making of a Wheel:
The wheel started out as a man-made log. The Sumerians figured out that if they could prop the edge of a heavy crate up onto a long log-shaped object, they would be able to roll the load over the object and move it forward. They would then place a second log under the front edge of the load and continue rolling it.
Wheel and its uses:
Being very practical people, the Sumerians were not satisfied with “The Roller. They wanted an easier way to move heavy loads. Their next invention was called “The Sledge.” It did not have a roller. Instead, they took their crate and attached a base with runners under it so that it resembled a large sled. The front edges of these runners were curved up like skis. Because of this curve, the runners slid more easily across the ground. There was also a straight crosspiece that connected the two runners in the front. It braced the two runners and was used as a handle for pulling and guiding the sledge. It took a lot of pushing and pulling, but people were able to move their loaded crates on the runners.
What the Sumerians ended up with was a two-wheeled cart. This was later developed into a chariot that could be pulled by a horse or donkey. Other surrounding civilizations copied the design and quickly adapted the wheel to the needs of their own cultures.
The field of pottery is a crucial discovery for progression of humanity. The containers that were prepared by the potters are helpful for carrying the essentials of drinking water and nutritious food. There was yet another enhancement by utilizing the wheels for moving on the vehicles. The advanced version of these wheels is now being used by the cars, which we use today for our own convenience.
There was always a regular growth in the advancement of inventing new and innovative designs of wheels. The wheels that we now see in ships and other heavy vehicles were also invented during the early centuries, but the differences are huge. The designs earlier were simpler in comparison to the designs we see today, as they are more advanced and are completely prepared from the amalgamation of the best of technologies.
